Kampala | The newly sworn-in student leaders of Biyaya Secondary School in Adjumani district have been challenged to uphold discipline, serve as role models, and ensure that their leadership responsibilities do not affect their academic performance.
The call was made during the school’s prefects’ swearing-in ceremony, where school administrators, religious leaders, and community leaders emphasised servant leadership, discipline, and academic excellence.
Biyaya Secondary School headteacher, Dradi William, said the newly elected prefects occupy a vital position in the school’s administration and should provide exemplary leadership.
“I expect them to lead by example, and then I expect them to have a following because their fellow students elected them. As administrators and leadership of the prefecture, we see it as a pillar of the school. So, the school’s administration values them.”
The chairperson of Men’s Union West Nile, Camon Dralega Onesmus, urged student leaders to remain focused on the purpose that brought them to school and avoid being distracted by social challenges such as drug abuse.
“So, I challenged students not to concentrate on non-issues. To concentrate on their mandate: why are they here? The issues of drug abuse are rampant in many schools. These are not issues about school. This is a family issue. These children originate from families.”
Speaking on behalf of the newly sworn-in prefects, prefect Anyanzo, Joel Adibaku, pledged to work towards strengthening discipline, fairness, and unity within the school community.
“Yes, we have been sworn in as prefects. There are things that we hope to achieve for the school. Yeah, one is promoting discipline and fairness.
“We want to build a school where the level of discipline among students is being talked about outside. Okay? We want a school where there is unity among students and administration.”
Delivering his message during the ceremony, the Bishop of Madi West Nile Diocese, Rt. Rev. Charles Collins Andaku, reminded student leaders that leadership is a calling from God and urged them to remain committed to both service and their studies.

“Leadership is all about God. My message is: you should remember that God appointed you to bear good fruits, and you should remain focused as a linkage between the student body and the administration; be disciplined to the school administration.”
The bishop advised that students should be able to study hard, find extra time to study so they can excel in their academics.
The swearing-in ceremony marked the official beginning of the new students’ lindership team with school.
