Kole man kills wife, then dies

Lira

Kole | The police in Kole district are investigating two incidents—an alleged murder by cutting and a subsequent suicide by hanging.

These sad incidents occurred on June 1, 2026, at around 1:00 am at Te-ibule Cell in Bala town council, Kole district.

The matter was reported by Omara Jackson, 42, the LC1 chairperson of Te-ibule Cell, Western Ward B.

According to SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police PRO, Atenge Sam, 45, a peasant farmer and resident of the above area, killed Atim Joan, 39.

Atim was also a peasant farmer. The pair fought over a domestic matter, police say.

PRO SP Okema added: “It is alleged that on June 1, 2026, at around 1:00 am at their home in Te-ibule Cell, the couple had a misunderstanding that led to a fight.

“During the altercation, Atenge picked up a panga and badly cut his wife, Atim, causing her death. Upon realising that she had died, he also committed suicide by hanging himself inside the house.”

Immediately, the police were informed about the incident, and the scene was visited by the District Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) and a team from the homicide squad.

Both bodies of the deceased were picked up and conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary, pending a postmortem examination.

All exhibits used to cause the deaths, including a rope and a panga, SP Okema said, were recovered. It is alleged that the deceased couple had been cohabiting for some time.

Police say they encourage family heads, clan leaders, and religious leaders to step in and offer support.

“Couples should learn to express their grievances freely and seek support before matters escalate,” the PRO, on behalf of the police, urges.

Since the year began, the Lango sub-region has seen annoyingly high rates of murder cases, with the police always calling on cultural and religious leaders to take a lead.
