Outgoing Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among’s shs3.5b Rolls Royce has exposed Uganda and “her August House” to the public but more to the authorities.
Criticisms have been viral since news of the presence of Rolls became public, with activists and a few politicians questioning the timing and source of funds for such a luxurious ride.
In what seemed like it would never hit the boiling point, Among had a relief after unverified news was that the country’s number one had okayed the pompous ride to hit the road.
Unfortunately, she would be trapped in the corruption web before enjoying the coolness of her new asset.
Among is, until now, if an audit can be made, is one of the wealthiest human beings in Uganda.
As the head of Parliament, she ensured her office budget rose. Relatedly, in March 2024, Daily Monitor reported that the Parliament of the Republic of Uganda was spending shs2.6b every day.
Also, according to Uganda Observer in its January 18, 2023, report, the State House was spending shs2.8b every day.
One would want to ask: Why is, or was Parliament neck to neck with the State House regarding daily expenditures? Are the two entities equal? No!
Why corruption in Parliament is not extraordinary
Speaking shortly after his swearing-in as an elderly MP for Eastern Uganda, former government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo told the media that “the issue of corruption at Parliament was, in my view, overhyped.”

“It can’t just be Parliament,” Opondo added. “Which body of Uganda is not corrupt? Is it the police, the judiciary, or the executive?” Tell me,” he continued.
He added: “It’s unfair to simply pinpoint Parliament. “As representatives of the people, they [the 11th Parliament] ought to be a little more careful.”
