The biggest problem we have now is corruption – Museveni

corruption

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was sworn in on May 12 to resume in authority over Uganda for another five years.

Museveni, 81, came to power through armed struggle in 1986. Proud to call himself Ssabalwanyi, Museveni has been vocal on corruption and the lavish lifestyles of some Ugandans.

For corruption, he has had tough decisions to make and ensure his ruling party – the NRM – in power for now 40 years – is appreciated far and wide.

According to the most recent IGG report, Uganda loses over shs1m to corruption per hour.

This is too much for Uganda whose total public debt stood at shs130.8 trillion – according to the Ministry of Finance, 2025.

And to reduce the public debt to manageable figures, more than speeches and lectures by the Head of State are required.

Amid ongoing investigations into alleged wasteful expenditures or shocking wealth gained by the outgoing Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among and her allies, we look back to one of President Museveni’s statements on June 20, 2024.

On X, he wrote: “This corruption is not happening on the moon, it’s happening in the district, sub-county, and constituency. I have opened a war on the corrupt, so, make sure that you are not in my gun sight. We cannot let our people down.”
