Big dreamer Dokolo woman MP Aguti enters speakership race

More than eight MPs have expressed interest in contesting for the deputy speaker of the 12th Parliament.

Among them is Sarah Aguti Nyangkori, the Dokolo District Woman Member of Parliament on the UPC ticket, who has officially announced her candidacy, declaring herself ready to take on the position.

Speaking via a phone interview on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, MP Aguti said she was urging all honourable members of the 12th Parliament of Uganda to embrace her candidacy.

She asserted that she is the right candidate suited for this position. “As we undertake the important responsibility of constituting the leadership of Parliament, I wish to respectfully remind honourable members and the people of Uganda that the offices of Speaker and Deputy Speaker are constitutional positions that ought to be filled through a free, fair, transparent, and democratic electoral process within this House.”

“I therefore present myself before you as a competent, committed, and capable candidate, ready to serve with integrity, diligence, and impartiality. If entrusted with this responsibility, i pledge to contribute towards building a vibrant, accountable, and inclusive Parliament that fosters meaningful debate, respects diverse opinions, and ensures that every voice within this House is heard and accorded due consideration,” she said.

Aguti lamented that at a time when public concern regarding accountability and corruption remains a matter of national importance, Parliament must continue to uphold the highest standards of transparency, ethical leadership, and public trust.

“As deputy speaker, I commit myself to promoting accountability, strengthening institutional integrity, and supporting efforts aimed at ensuring that Parliament remains responsive to the aspirations and interests of the people of Uganda,” she stated.

She emphasised her belief in leadership that listens, represents, and protects the interests of all citizens, including minority voices both within Parliament and beyond. Aguti reaffirmed her commitment to advancing constructive engagement, fairness, and principled leadership in service to the nation.

She called upon all members of Parliament from different political parties—including NUP, UPC, DP, FDC, Independents, and NRM—to trust her with their votes, insisting she is the right candidate to take over the chair.

Aguti replaced veteran politician Cecilia Atim Ogwal in a by-election following her death from a hospital in India on January 18, 2024.
