Leaders in the Kwania district are hopeful that the Ministry of Works and Transport will soon work on a critical road linking their residents to the neighbouring Dokolo district.
The approximately 7.8km road is made up of critical swamps where rising water levels from Lake Kwania have consistently cut off road access.
Kwania District Engineer’s Office, in coordination with LC5 chairman Geoffrey Alex Ogwal, submitted a formal request to the Ministry for the rehabilitation of these sections.
These include a 3.6km stretch from Nambieso sub-county through Ayabi to Agwata in Dokolo district, and a 4.2km section on the Aboko–Atongtidi–Alido–Chawente road.
District Engineer Edward Odongo Eyak confirmed the formal request to the ministry following outcries from residents in Ayabi, Nambieso, and Chawente sub-counties regarding the impassable state of these roads.
Odongo explained that the district was forced to seek central government intervention because the local budget is too small to handle such major engineering works.
Residents of Ayabi sub-county expressed frustration, noting that the flooding has paralysed transport and hindered the delivery of agricultural produce to markets.
Ambrose Okori, the LC3 chairman of Nambieso, added that the scale of the damage on these roads has surpassed the district’s financial capacity.
Meanwhile, Kwania Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) David Wambere Wasikye clarified that while some roads fall under the district’s jurisdiction, others are the responsibility of the central government, and they are working to ensure the ministry takes over those that are beyond local means.
The Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Abraham Aturu Alub, reminded leaders that President Yoweri Museveni had previously pledged to improve infrastructure in the region, including the Loro–Landing Site road, and urged officials to follow the proper channels to see these promises fulfilled.
Kwania district currently manages over 2,300km of roads but operates on a limited budget of approximately shs1 billion.
