Oyam

Police in Amolatar district are investigating a case of murder by assault that occurred around 7:39 pm at Kabangala village, Kabanga parish, Muntu sub-county, Amolatar.

Ogwal Kizito, a 36 year old teacher and resident of Wangipol village, Agwenonywal parish, Nalibwoyo sub-county, Amolatar, reported the case to police on March 1 at 10:30 am.

Police’s preliminary findings indicate that on February 28 at 7:30 pm, the deceased, identified as Elwonge, 40; a peasant farmer and resident of Nakituba ‘A’ village, Muntu parish, Muntu sub-county, was at a drinking joint within Kabangala village together with the suspect, Ayoki Denis, 54.

Ayoki is also a peasant farmer but resides in Awercek village, Muntu parish, Muntu sub-county.

A misunderstanding reportedly arose between the two, which escalated into a physical fight, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, said.

“It is alleged that during the altercation, the suspect overpowered the deceased and forcefully pulled his genitals before they were separated by other people present,” he added.

The deceased reportedly returned to his home after the incident and went to sleep. However, on March 1 at about 10 am, he was found dead, allegedly as a result of injuries sustained during the assault.

A case of murder by assault has since been registered at Amolatar CPS. “A team of detectives from Amolatar CPS, together with the District Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO), visited and documented the scene. Relevant statements have been recorded from witnesses to aid investigations,” SP Okema told reporters on Monday.

The body of the deceased was conveyed to Amolatar Health Centre IV for postmortem examination, and a PF 48 form was duly issued.

Inquiries are ongoing to establish the exact cause of death and the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Further updates will be communicated in due course through PF 16 and PF 16A.

The police condemn acts of violence arising from minor misunderstandings and urge members of the public to resolve disputes amicably and report any incidents promptly to the nearest police station.

This is the first documented case leading to the death of a man in Lango sub-region in years.
