The deputy commander of Land Forces, Maj. Gen. Francis Takirwa, has died. He was ill for “some time” – sources say.
He served UPDF in the military since 1989 and held a number of military roles.
Until his death, he was the deputy commander of Land Forces and previously commanded the UPDF’s Second Division based in Mbarara.
He also served as the army’s chief of education, sports and culture.
Takirwa was part of the Ugandan contingent deployed to Somalia under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) between 2011 and 2012, a mission aimed at stabilising the country against al-Shabaab militants.
He was born in 1965 in Mbarara district and undertook several professional military courses, including training in Uganda, Tanzania, China, Egypt and South Africa.
In January 2024, he urged soldiers to ensure the safety and security of Ugandans since the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces has developed its operational capacity to tackle both territorial and regional threats.
He was during the pass out of over 555 troops including 180 females who completed a three-month refresher course at the 3 Infantry Division headquarters, Moroto Barracks.
