Culture & People: Benjamin Okii, 70, re-elected as head of Okiibura clan

Lira City | Benjamin Okii, 70, has been re-elected as the head of the Okii Bura clan. Members of the clan have once again placed their trust in their long-serving leader, who has guided the clan for over 30 years.

Okii was first elected in 1996 at the age of 40.

According to Bilson Ojom Ogom, the chairperson of the electoral commission for Okii Bura clan, the re-election followed a clear constitutional process.

Addressing journalists on Monday, February 2, 2026, at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Lira City, Ojom stated that the clan’s 2024 constitution—following a council meeting on September 26, 2024—announced the position was open.

Aspiring candidates were required to submit their academic documents to the electoral commission office.

Ojom added that after this pronouncement was made public on January 8, 2025, the commission scheduled a nomination period from January 20 to January 22, 2026.

However, no individuals came forward to pick up nomination papers during the first two days. The only candidate was the incumbent, Benjamin Okii Epila, who submitted his nomination on the third day at approximately 4:34 pm, expressing his interest to remain in office for another five-year term.

The Electoral Commission chairperson thanked clan members for their respect throughout the process and commended the clan leader’s office for their work in implementing the electoral guidelines.

This effort, he noted, helps elevate the stature of the Okii Bura clan. Consequently, Benjamin Okii is set to lead the clan until 2031, as the constitution mandates a five-year term for the clan head.

In his statement, the re-elected leader urged his people to foster unity with others to maintain the clan’s respect. He recounted that since his initial election in 1996, he has worked to unite the clan internally, with neighboring clans, and with the government.

He specifically urged clan members to avoid abusing people over the radio and to continue respecting their elders.

Okii also thanked the clan members for trusting him with another term. He attributed this continued support to the clan’s adherence to the teachings of the late Lango Paramount Chief, Yosam Odur Ebii who emphasized that respecting elders is a path to a long and prosperous life.

Benjamin Okii is associated with the Lango Cultural Foundation, which is currently headed by the Acting Lango Paramount Chief, Fredrick Ogwal Oyee.

Oyee assumed the role following the passing of Paramount Chief Yosam Odur E-bill, who died at Lira University Teaching Hospital.
