Uganda’s MAAIF seeks shs17b to increase pork and chicken production

The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries (MAAIF) is seeking shs17 billion to establish and renovate piggery and chicken breeding infrastructure on government ranches.

The fund, according to the minister, is expected to increase pork and chicken production in Uganda.

Bright Rwamirama, Minister of State for Animal Husbandry at MAAIF made the request while appearing before Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture. He presented the Ministry’s 2026/27 National Budget Framework Paper.

“Establish and renovate livestock breeding and production, support infrastructure on government farms and ranches. Focus will be on piggery, poultry structures, support rapid breeding and production of high-performing piggery and poultry breeds,” Rwamirama told the Lawmakers.

The Ministry of Agriculture, he said, will establish livestock breeding, paddocks, spray races, intensive direct control, sheds, and valley tanks, among others.

“The estimate here is about UGX17 billion,” the minister emphasised.

In the financial year 2024/2025, the program budget for the sector experienced a reduction of 10.6%, approximately shs192.1 billion, compared to the 2023/24 financial year.

During the same period, other agricultural agencies under the ministry were allocated funding as follows: NAGRIC-DB, shs80 billion, UCDA, shs45 billion, and NAADS, shs34 billion.

Others are the Dairy Development Authority, shs13.1 billion and the Cotton Development Organisation, shs5.4 billion.
