Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, 81, got his 7th term as President of Uganda on January 17, extending his rule until 2031.
President-elect Museveni won the January 15 poll with 7,946,772 votes, equivalent to 71.65%. He was followed by Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert aka Bobi Wine of NUP who obtained 2,741,238 votes – representing 24.72%.
The results and declaration were made at 4pm on Saturday by Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
Museveni has been in power since 1986. He has sailed through the ballots since 1996. Among presidents to have congratulated him upon reelection are Kenya’s William Ruto and Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan.
“On behalf of the Government and the People of the United Republic of Tanzania, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Your Excellency, President-elect Yoweri Museveni on your re-election.
“Your victory represents the confidence and trust the people of the Republic of Uganda have in your leadership and vision.
“I am looking forward to continuing working with you in deepening the fraternal and historical bond between our two countries, for the benefit of all our citizens,” Suluhu said, in a statement posted on her official X handle on Monday.
Seven candidates were nominated by the Electoral Commission of Uganda to vie for President. Excluding Kyagulanyi, none of the six obtained half a million vote, or interms of percentage – more than (2) two.
