LEMU’s ED Dr Theresa Auma takes oath as Kangai SS board chairperson

Dr Theresa Auma Eilu, Executive Director of Land and Equity Movement in Uganda (LEMU) and senior lecturer at Makerere University, has officially assumed leadership as the new chairperson of the Board of Governors for Kangai Secondary School in Dokolo District.

She assumed her responsibilities following the swearing-in and inauguration ceremony held on Friday, October 31, 2025.

In her maiden address, Dr Auma pledged to focus on addressing the challenges that have hindered the school’s progress over the years.

“In the past, Kangai SS was among the top-performing schools in Dokolo that supported children to access education at an affordable rate,” she recalled.

She noted that one of the key factors leading to the school’s decline in performance has been its operation with limited resources.

Dr Theresa emphasised that resource mobilization is a top priority under her leadership, assuring that Kangai SS will enhance its financial base through district capitation grants and stronger collaborations.

On the issue of student enrollment and dropout rates, she observed that the financial constraints faced by parents have greatly affected both access and performance.

To address this, the Board of Governors’ chairperson pledged to champion resource mobilization efforts and create a scholarship program aimed at supporting vulnerable but promising learners, an initiative she believes will help boost both enrollment and academic outcomes in the near future.

The Education Secretary for the Diocese of Lango, Christopher Odongo, expressed optimism that the new board will meet the expectations of all stakeholders.

He commended the new leadership, noting that it possesses the vision and energy needed to unite various stakeholders toward achieving the educational goals of Kangai SS.

Kangai SS headteacher, Joel Okello, also welcomed the new board members and expressed confidence in their ability to restore the school’s past glory.

He revealed that the school’s enrollment, which once exceeded 1,500 students, has dropped to just 309, but assured that efforts are underway to reverse the trend.

Dr Auma takes over from Rev. Canon Silvesto Ocen. Other newly appointed members of the Board include Cons Amai, a retired civil servant, Florence Akao, a retired headteacher among others.

Their tenure runs up to 2028.
