At only fifteen years old, Jewel Michael is stepping up to champion the cause of disadvantaged children through the newly established Jewel Michael Foundation for Education.
The initiative is set to benefit more than 10,000 girls from refugee settlements and local communities by providing learning materials, mentorship, and financial support, with a commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind.
“I had four cousins, most of them dropped out of school, one dropped out due to financial constraint, and one dropped out due to early pregnancy. This has inspired me to start this foundation to help young girls,” Jewel said.
The foundation, co-founded and chaired by General (Rtd) Michael Ondoga, marks a major shift in his focus from waging battles against insurgency to confronting social challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and domestic violence. The official launch is scheduled for Friday, September 5, 2025, at Paridi Stadium in Adjumani town.
“Education has shaped who I am today. In life, three major obstacles hinder progress: illiteracy, poverty, and domestic violence. That is why I chose to support my daughter’s initiative,” Ondoga stated
Moses Akuma Odims, Executive Director of the West Nile Development Association (WENDA), who addressed a pre-launch event at the Adjumani district local government hall, praised Jewel for her vision.
He said the foundation has the potential to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people across the region.
Jewel, who has gained recognition as Miss Teen Pearl of Africa and first runner-up at the Miss Universe pageant, has impressed many with her leadership and compassion.
Through her foundation, she hopes to expand opportunities for young people to stay in school, develop skills, and achieve their dreams, values that align with WENDA’s mission of advancing regional development.
Education has already proven to be transformative in West Nile, with projects like horticulture helping reduce imports and create jobs. Odims urged the community to rally behind the new foundation, noting that empowering the youth will fuel innovation and economic growth while nurturing future leaders.
Jewel, daughter of Maj Gen Michael Ondoga, continues to shine both nationally and internationally. Last year, she represented Uganda at the Miss Teen of the Universe competition in India, finishing as second runner-up overall.
She also earned the titles of Miss Elegance and Miss Teen of the Universe Africa, standing out among contestants from 14 countries. Her passion for education reflects the broader themes of inclusivity and environmental protection championed at the pageant.
Besides her achievements on stage, Jewel is a vocalist, guitarist, Sunday school teacher, and dedicated advocate for children’s rights.
Her foundation will focus primarily on education in the West Nile, with special guests such as Gen Salim Saleh expected to attend the launch.
With her energy, talent, and determination, Jewel Michael is proving that even at a young age, one can ignite change and pave the way for a brighter future for children and communities alike.
