Ker Kwaro Acholi, the cultural institution of the Acholi people, has formally welcomed the fusion of German culture with Northern Uganda through the upcoming Gulu City Oktoberfest.
The festival, set to become an annual event every October, will bring together communities from across Uganda and beyond to celebrate unity through music, dance, food, business, and dialogue.
Prime Minister of Ker Kwaro Acholi, Martin Okumu, confirmed that all 57 chiefs of Acholi will participate, alongside kings and cultural leaders from across Greater Northern Uganda and representatives from cultural institutions including Buganda, Busoga, Tooro, Kumam, Japadhola, Lango, Madi, and Lugbara.
“Personally, I was blessed to witness Oktoberfest in Berlin. It is a festival that unites people in merrymaking, music, dance, and food. Hosting it here will not only enhance our culture but also showcase Acholi uniqueness,” Okumu said.
He proposed food stop-points to allow visitors to taste Acholi delicacies, adding that tourism is not only about nature but also about people and their way of life.
Gulu City Mayor Alfred Okwonga said an estimated 30,000 visitors are expected, noting that the event will boost tourism, attract investment, and generate income.
He revealed that the opening ceremony will be officiated by the President on October 7, followed by the launch of Gulu City and Acholi sub-region’s investment plan on October 8.
“This multicultural festival will bring together people from different Ugandan tribes and international visitors to share and showcase cultures,” Okwonga said, urging residents to be hospitable.
Rotarian Olum Tonnac Obita noted that the festival is designed to benefit local communities through trade and innovation.
“We want people to sell their best products, build brands, and even begin exporting. There will be a cultural gala, entertainment, and fireworks on Independence Day, October 9,” he said.
Preparations are ongoing, with registration for musicians, restaurants, and food vendors set at shs50,000, while larger exhibition spaces are available at negotiated rates. Organizers are also preparing samples of local fashion to be marketed in Europe.
Entrepreneur Acan Gladys welcomed the opportunity, saying the Oktoberfest will open doors for business expansion.
“This is a chance to market our products internationally. It is a dream come true for me and many others,” she said.
The Gulu business community has described the event as a life-changing opportunity that will leave a mark on the cultural, economic, and infrastructural development of the city and Acholi sub-region.
