Otuke: Grandson, 25, stabs grandfather, 76, to death over shs10k

Otuke | A man identified as Ongu Calvin, 25, has been arrested by police in Otuke district on allegations that he stabbed his grandfather, Ongu John, 76, to death.

According to SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Public Relations Officer for the North Kyoga Region (Lango), the incident occurred on August 18, 2025, at around 6:00 pm in Teokango village, Anepkide parish, Olilim sub-county, Otuke.

Okema stated that the incident was reported and registered at Olilim Sub-County Police Station on August 19, 2025, by Owume Francis, 32, a resident of the same village.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased had obtained a village loan of shs500,000 on August 17, 2025. “The following day, August 18, at approximately 6:00 pm, the suspect, Ongu Calvin, demanded shs10,000 shillings from his grandfather to buy a new pair of shoes. The deceased refused to give him the money,” SP Okema said in a statement on Tuesday.

This refusal immediately led to a physical altercation, during which the suspect stabbed his grandfather. The victim was rushed to a nearby clinic but was later pronounced dead.

The suspect was apprehended by the local community and handed over to the police. A case of murder by stabbing has been registered at Olilim Sub-County Police Station to facilitate further investigation.

A team of police officers from Otuke CPS visited and examined the crime scene, thoroughly documenting their findings. Relevant statements from witnesses have also been recorded, according to SP Okema.

An exhibit, identified as “the killer knife”, was recovered from the crime scene and has been held as evidence.

A postmortem examination was conducted, and the body later released to the relatives for burial.

Police have described this as “a very unfortunate incident.” “It’s such a very unfortunate incident, where our youths have developed a character of expecting free things. Let’s work hard.”

SP Okema further advised young men in the community to harness their energy for hard work to achieve what they want, rather than constantly waiting for handouts.

“This matter will be investigated to its logical conclusion. Upon completion, the investigation file will be compiled and submitted to the Resident State Attorney (RCSA) for perusal and legal advice,” he added in a statement.
