Sam Engola, the former MP for Erute South, has won the NRM flag for the same constituency he represented.
In 2021, Engola was defeated by UPC candidate Jonathan Odur, who received 17,763 votes against 15,606.
Engola would later turn to farming and managing his various businesses. Years later, President Yoweri Museveni appointed him senior presidential adviser for Lango.
Sam, a former State Minister for Housing and Urban Development, has resurrected his political hopes after winning the NRM primary election on July 17.
He defeated Abdul George, the former Apac and Amuru RDC, who received 2,852 votes. Engola was declared the winner after receiving 18,572 votes, representing 86.7% and 13.3% respectively.
According to Moses Okello, the NRM returning officer for Lira district, voter turnout was low in the 297 villages that comprise Erute South’s six sub-counties: Itek, Amac, Agali, Awiodyek, Bar, and Amac town council.
He revealed that 21,424 votes were cast and split between the two candidates.
Abdul, who initially disputed the results, ha now conceded defeat to Engola.
