Lira | Geoffrey Etwop, a business magnate and incumbent NRM treasurer, has officially declared his candidacy for the Lira City NRM chairperson position.
He has paved the way for a competitive party leadership race ahead of the 2026-2031 general elections.
Speaking to tndNews on Wednesday, Etwop confirmed his desire to advance from treasurer to chairperson.
“After serving as treasurer, I’m ready to elevate my leadership role. My track record speaks for itself, and I’m confident of victory.”
He dismissed rumors about his candidacy and urged supporters to disregard misinformation.
“I call on all NRM cadres from villages to the district to unite behind my vision. Let’s focus on peace, forgiveness, and securing more government benefits for Lira City.”
The race has sparked debate within party ranks, with Jacob Ocen, NRM Publicity secretary Lira district, saying: “Our constitution allows any member to contest vacant positions. We’ll work with whoever emerges victorious.”
Lydia Akello, NRM youth league cice chairperson, Lira West, said “while Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng has the right to run, I urge her to leave this seat for others. Lower positions should empower grassroots leaders.”
Similarly, Stella Night Adongo, NRM flag bearer for Lira East, stated: “Power rotation strengthens the party. Holding multiple positions concentrates influence unfairly.”
The current NRM chairperson, Bodyguard Odongo, has welcomed the competition, saying that “leadership is not permanent. Let opponents wait for the official roadmap. For now, I remain the chairperson.”
Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, a Lira City woman Member of Parliament, has expressed an interest in running for the same office against Geoffrey Etwop, and all eyes are on “who will make it.”
Whoever is elected will serve from 2026 to 2031.
