As global interest in studying abroad continues to grow, ApplyBoard’s latest Student Pulse Survey (spring 2025 edition) provides critical insights into the evolving priorities of international students.
With responses from nearly 850 students across 84 countries—including 496 students from 29 African nations—the survey sheds light on shifting study destination preferences, the rising impact of affordability, and emerging trends that will shape international education in the coming years.
Affordability remains the top concern for students
Affordability has become a defining factor in students’ decision-making, with 77% of respondents ranking tuition fees as the most important factor when choosing a study program.
Concerns about the cost of living and financial constraints are prompting students to explore alternative destinations and study pathways.
While Canada remains the most popular destination—garnering interest from 94% of students—there is also a noticeable increase in demand for more budget-friendly options across Europe and Asia.
Countries such as Germany, Ireland, Spain, Lithuania, and Finland are gaining traction due to their lower tuition fees and post-graduate opportunities.
Despite financial challenges, most students remain committed to pursuing their studies abroad. Only 9% are considering deferring their education, while many are actively seeking cost-saving alternatives.
Among them, 16% are looking into different programs, and 11% are exploring shorter, more affordable study options.
Nigeria’s growing appeal as a study destination
While African students continue to explore international study opportunities, there is a parallel trend of growing interest in Nigeria as a higher education destination.
The survey highlights a shift in student behavior, with Nigeria emerging as a competitive option for students seeking quality education within the region.
As affordability concerns rise, more students are considering regional alternatives that offer strong academic programs, a familiar cultural environment, and lower costs compared to studying in North America or Europe.
With a rising number of institutions improving their offerings, expanding international partnerships, and enhancing post-graduate career pathways, Nigeria is positioning itself as a destination of choice for students looking for accessible and high-quality education.
This trend aligns with broader efforts across Africa to strengthen local education systems and retain talent within the region.
Engineering and technology fields dominate career aspirations
Career outcomes remain a key factor in students’ study decisions. Engineering emerged as the most in-demand field, with software and civil engineering leading the way. Healthcare also saw strong interest, with nursing ranking as the second-most popular career choice.
Other trending fields include IT, cybersecurity, data analysis, and artificial intelligence, underscoring students’ focus on future job market demands.
Postgraduate studies gain traction
Interest in postgraduate education continues to rise, particularly in master’s and doctoral programs. Over half of surveyed students expressed interest in pursuing a master’s degree, and PhD interest increased by four percentage points year-over-year.
This reflects the growing appeal of advanced degrees, which often provide better post-study work opportunities and long-term career benefits.
Looking ahead: What this means for the future of study abroad
The survey results reinforce that the study abroad landscape is evolving, driven by students’ desire for affordability, career prospects, and high-quality education.
As more students weigh their options, institutions and governments worldwide will need to adapt to these changing preferences by offering flexible, cost-effective pathways that align with students’ long-term goals.
For African students, the findings suggest a more diverse range of opportunities—both internationally and within the continent—will define the next phase of global education trends.
