The political landscape in the Lango sub-region continues to change, with Apac district council speaker Peter Obong Acuda announcing his candidacy for the Murazi County parliamentary seat in the 2026 general election.
During an exclusive interview with tndNews, the 47-year-old teacher-turned-politician revealed his ambitions and discussed his two-decade career in public service.
In 2006, he entered politics as the Akokoro parish representative to APAC.
After losing the LC3 chairmanship race, he briefly returned to teaching at King James Comprehensive Secondary School in 2011.
He was elected unopposed as Apac district speaker from 2018 to 2021, following the creation of the Kwania district.
In 2021, he won the Akokoro sub-county LC5 representative to the Apac district council with 98.6% of the vote.
“My grassroots experience and legislative track record make me the ideal candidate to replace MP Akora,” Acuda stated.
Maruzi County is made up of three subcounties: Akokoro Town Council and Akokoro sub-county, Ibuje Town Council and Ibuje sub-county, and Apoi.
It has become a political hotspot since Akora’s relocation. Analysts believe Acuda’s deep roots in Akokoro, where he previously served as a councillor and was close to becoming LC3 chair, give him a strategic advantage.
Acuda’s announcement comes amid major UPC realignments, with Apac Municipality now their primary focus.
“As an educator, I will strive to enhance the education system in my community, enabling many children to successfully progress from lower levels of education to higher stages,” Acuda said
Following Akora’s 10-year tenure, he focuses on Murazi’s development needs.
With nominations expected later this year, Acuda intends to hold grassroots consultations in all five sub-counties.
His legislative agenda includes a focus on education and infrastructure, as well as seeking UPC party endorsement in primaries.
“Murazi needs a representative who understands both local governance and national legislation – that’s what I offer,” said Acuda.
