Lira | The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) held a successful annual charity marathon in Lira City on March 2, with winners in each category receiving awards and prizes.
Over 500 people from across the country took part, including professional athletes and amateur runners from various institutions and clubs.
Adyema Allan finished first in the men’s 42 kilometer race. Chemtegi Ruth won the women’s distance category, while Kipchang Jacob won the 21 kilometer men’s category.
Jacob Bishmas won the 10 kilometer race, Kucharit Ronald won the 5 kilometer race. Cherry Macmillan won the 21 kilometer women’s category, among other runners.
Each winner from each category received cash prizes and medals from the (UWA) ranging from shs50,000 to shs1 million.
The annual event was aiming to raise funds for the education of the children of fallen rangers who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting Uganda Wildlife and natural resources.
Aside from the women’s and men’s categories, children under the age of 18 received awards.
The charity run was attended by Lira City Council Mayor Sam Atul, who welcomed visitors from all over the country during his speech.

Mayor Atul encouraged parents to embrace athletics and let their children participate in sports. “…it will keep their health and education.”
James Musuzi, the incoming Executive Director of UWA, encouraged others to follow in the footsteps of some of the country’s and world’s top athletes if they want to achieve success in life.
