The lion’s share of Lira City East Division’s draft budget for 2025/26

Lira | On March 25, 2025, councillors from Lira City East Division received a draft budget of shs3,749,482,027 for fiscal year 2025/2026.

The figure is a shs91,585,777 increase over the amount approved for the current fiscal year (2024/2025).

Secretary of Finance, Charles Opio Olol, presented the draft budget to the councillors.

The administration has been allocated the largest share of the budget, shs461.7 million.

Council business came in second place, with shs397.9 million.

Works and technical services have been allocated shs260.7 million.

The finance department received shs257.6 million, while the health department has been given shs251.5 million.

Education had received shs130.7 million, while Gender and Community-based Service Delivery receives shs97.3 million.

Under physical planning, shs61.4 million to support urban planning and development is pending council approval.

The natural resources department has been allocated shs31.6 million in funding to support natural resource conservation and management.

A total of shs31.4 million has been allotted to trade and industry department.

According to Opio Olol, a total of shs1.6 billion, or approximately 50%, will be shared with Lira City Council.

The division mayor, George Okello Ayoo, has urged council members to thoroughly review the draft budget before it is approved in May.

On the same day, councillors elected Akidi Nora, who represents the people of Te-lela, as the new chairperson of finance and planning.

Akidi succeeds Ogwang Samuel Silus.

She took the position after defeating Jasper Ajwika by four votes. After giving each nominee minutes to speak and present their manifestos on the council floor, the councillors voted in secret.

Jasper received 18 council votes, while Akidi received 22.

Ogwang Silus represented the residents of Railways Quarters before taking a new position as senior account assistant with the Ministry of Education and Sports in March 2025.

The ministry has assigned him to Nancy Comprehensive School for the Deaf (SS).

Geoferry Obote of Te-Omogo is another councillor whose position is currently vacant. He has accepted a position as assistant inventory management officer with Lira City Council.
