Lira | Acora Sandra Can-dwong, Uganda Cricket Association regional operations manager for northern, has confirmed that the secondary schools in Lira City and Lango will compete on April 2 and 3 before proceeding to the regional competition in Gulu City.

The regional competitions are scheduled for the second week of April, 2025. The competitions will serve as a stepping stone to the national championships.

According to Sandra, the boys’ national meet is scheduled for July in Jinja, while the girls’ national cricket competitions will be held in Gulu City in May 2025.

Thomas Ato, a senior four student and Lango College Cricket Club captain, is confident in his team’s upcoming regional performance.

Ato attributes their readiness to adequate training. “The team has been receiving guidance from qualified coaches.”

On preparation, he stated that they are well-prepared to face the competition.

He is optimistic that Lango College will maintain its position in Lango, demonstrating their abilities and determination.

Last year, Lango College represented Lira City in regional cricket tournaments in Gulu.

Sandra Can-dwong provided exciting updates on the mini cricket tournament for primary schools in Lira City. This event happened on March 14, 2025.

The competition featured 10 primary schools divided into two categories: under 13 (boys and girls) and under 11 (boys and girls).

Under 13 boys: Ojwina Primary

Under 13 girls: Railway Primary

Under 11 girls: Lira Army Primary

Under 11 boys: Lira Army Primary

She stated that these four schools will represent Lira City at the regional cricket tournament in Gulu City in the second term of this year.

The regional operations manager highlighted a number of challenges encountered while organizing school-level cricket.

She cited a lack of equipment due to limited resources, with only a few provided by the Uganda Cricket Association.

The language barrier complicates communication and further impedes cricket’s promotion and development.

Some teachers in various schools have negative attitudes about cricket, indicating a lack of enthusiasm or support.

Meanwhile, Can-dwong has urged schools to embrace cricket and recognize the importance of sports.

She has also encouraged cricket development by providing resources and promoting a positive attitude towards the game.
