Oyam | On March 27, hundreds, if not thousands, of women marched through Kamdini town council to commemorate belated International Women’s Day.

The procession ended at the Kamdini Primary School playground, where a large crowd gathered.

Several leaders attended the Day’s event, including Oyam district LC5 chairperson Dilla Benson Oyuku and Santa Alum Ogwang, an Oyam district woman MP.

Jane Frances Acilo, who is running to replace Santa Alum in the 2026 parliamentary election, was also in attendance.

Acilo’s supporters painted Kamdini yellow, and her mobilisation banners flew high.

Speaking to the women of Oyam, she acknowledged their remarkable strength and resilience.

She stated that the women are responsible for their homes, communities, and fields.

“Their invaluable contributions are crucial to building a brighter future together,” she added.

She also highlighted additional yet urgent challenges that women face, among them limited access to tools, quality seeds, credit, and markets.

Despite women making up 76% of Uganda’s agricultural workforce, many households are still challenged, she noted.

Talking of a transformative vision, she said using agriculture as a tool will empower women by providing modern training, ensuring good yields, and offering direct access to markets.

“Initiatives like Abja farms are vital in this effort.”

Abja farms, owned by Acilo, is playing a critical role in championing agricultural transformation in Oyam.

Charlene Ruto, Kenya’s first daughter, recently visited and encouraged women in Oyam to embrace agriculture and support Jane Acilo’s vision of community empowerment.
