There is already a new innovation that families can use to prepare meals while saving energy. The Save 80 cook stove is a stainless steel stove that requires less wood or fuel to cook.
Energy experts say the innovation is safer and less expensive than traditional stoves (sigiri and three stone open fire cooking methods commonly used in rural households).
According to Haruna Serunkuma, director of Agro Supplies House Limited, Save 80’s certified distributor, the stove uses a few small wood sticks or twigs, as well as dry maize cobs.
The above, he reveals, provides sufficient heat needed to prepare a meal for a household of 5 to 10 people.
Haruna explains the basic rules for using Save 80. “Lighting is done by setting fire to a sheet of paper and some small pieces of wood in the burning chamber. When the fire is lighting, the pot is inserted.
“Afterwards the fire is maintained by throwing small firewood sticks through the quadratic aperture (in let). What is of particular importance is that small pieces of wood, which are not traditionally collected and burnt, can be used in the Save 80.”
Wonder box
The stove comes with a wonder box which is a thermal heat retention component. This is a complete set of the cooking process, Haruna explains. “And also, the wonder box acts as a good flask by keeping food warm for a period of 8-12 hours long, thereby saving more fuel and costs.”

Stove 80 is currently in use in several countries in Africa. Nigeria, Lesotho and Rwanda as one of the Clean Development Mechanisms projects of the United Nations Framework convention for climate change.
In Uganda, Makerere University’s Centre for Research in Energy and Energy Conservation (CREEC) has issued Save 80 a “Performance Test Certificate” under UNBS Iso/IEC 17025:2017.
The stove is the greatest substitute for the average person who cannot afford gas and electricity for cooking, according to Edwin Atukunda Beekunda, regional manager for Save 80 in Western Uganda.
“It saves over 80% of time, money, and is climate resilient compared to other means,” he adds.
Did you know that it takes 10 kilograms of wood to produce 1 kilogram of charcoal? Did you know that you can prune your fence and fruit tree branches around the house to get enough wood while saving 80%?” Atukunda asked.
A full set is sold at shs180,000 with a guaranteed period of up to 10 years.
