Lira City has taken a step forward in Uganda’s digital transformation with the launch of Airtel Uganda’s latest campaign, “A Network for Digital Acceleration.”
The campaign, which launched at Lango College Playground on Friday, March 14, demonstrates Airtel Uganda’s ongoing commitment to improving digital connectivity and fostering economic growth through technology.
Wongani Muthiya, Sales and Distribution Director Growth Market at Airtel Uganda notes that this initiative is part of a broader national rollout, with Lira being the first stop in a campaign aimed at bringing high-speed 4G and 5G networks to more locations across the country.
“The expansion means better internet speeds, improved voice quality, and greater digital accessibility for businesses, educational institutions, and residents,” said Wongani.
He further notes that Airtel Uganda has been at the forefront of digital transformation, having achieved several key milestones in recent years.
“In 2019, Airtel became Uganda’s first 100% 4G network, ensuring high-speed internet access to millions. By 2023, the company launched its 5G network, further solidifying its leadership in digital connectivity,” he added.
With this new campaign, the telecom giant is accelerating its infrastructure expansion, bridging the digital divide, and empowering Ugandans with the benefits of modern communication technologies.
The five new sites established in Lira include Akwoyo, Ireda, Kirombe, Starch Factory and Railway Quarters.
With these strategic sites, Airtel now hopes to significantly improve internet coverage, ensuring stronger signals, higher data speeds, and more reliable voice calls.
The company’s vision goes beyond simply expanding network coverage with the campaign emphasizing on community engagement, digital education, and financial inclusion.
By investing in business, education, agriculture, health, and entertainment, Airtel Uganda aims to empower individuals, entrepreneurs, and organizations with digital tools that can drive progress.
Speaking at the launch, Rebecca Alwedo, the Deputy Mayor of Lira City, highlighted the significance of Airtel Uganda’s investment in digital infrastructure.

She noted that Lira’s elevation to a City status in 2020 necessitated a strategic vision to transform it into a “green, competitive, and industrial city.”
“As part of this vision, we aim to elevate Lira into a smart city, ensuring that the growing industries operate efficiently. Today, we are pleased to partner with Airtel to enhance communication infrastructure in the city,” she stated.
David Birungi, Airtel Uganda’s Public Relations Officer, said the launch in Lira is just the beginning of a broader campaign.
“This is a national campaign, and the first activity is happening in Lira, focusing on the 4G network. Airtel Uganda remains committed to ensuring that every Ugandan, regardless of their location, has access to reliable and affordable digital services.”
He also noted that Airtel’s efforts to enhance digital connectivity will support this vision by providing seamless communication and access to online services, which are crucial for modern urban development.
According to Birungi, one of the major beneficiaries of this campaign is the education sector, citing that Airtel Uganda has already connected several schools to its network, including Acaba Primary School, Amwo Primary School, Otwal Primary School, Lango College, and Iceme Girls’ School.
“With better internet access, students and teachers can benefit from e-learning resources, research materials, and virtual collaboration tools, improving the quality of education,” said Birungi.
Additionally, Birungi confirmed that Airtel Uganda supports over 5,400 agents with three service points in Amolatar, Apac, and Lira City to ensure that businesses and individuals have easy access to Airtel’s services and mobile money solutions.
By expanding its network to more remote areas, Airtel is addressing the digital divide, enabling more Ugandans to access online services, mobile banking, e-commerce, and digital learning platforms.
The Friday event in Lira City is a major step towards Uganda’s digital transformation. Airtel Uganda’s investments in 4G and 5G networks, education, and business development will create new opportunities for growth, innovation, and connectivity.
As the campaign rolls out nationwide, Ugandans can look forward to faster internet speeds, greater access to digital services, and a future where connectivity drives progress.
With this initiative, Airtel Uganda reaffirms its commitment to creating a digitally inclusive society in which individuals and businesses can fully utilize technology to improve lives and drive economic growth.
