Minister Dr. Aceng receives the African Public Health Champion’s Award

Uganda’s Health Minister, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, has received a prestigious award in recognition of her efforts to promote public health not only in Uganda but throughout Africa.

Dr. Aceng, who is also the woman MP for Lira City, was named African Public Health Champion of the Year (2024) by the African Leadership Organisation.

The awards ceremony was held on February 22, 2025, at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, Morocco. Several African heads of state, including Andry Rajoelina, attended.

Shortly after receiving the award, Dr. Aceng attributed it to Uganda’s unwavering commitment to public health.

She said the continental award represents Uganda’s unwavering commitment to public health, and she praised the African Leadership Organization for the recognition and commitment to celebrating leadership that improves lives across Africa.

“We are able to do this because of the strong leadership of our President, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the strong partnerships, and the unwavering dedication of our health workers,” she stated.

The Minister has also dedicated the award to the country’s frontline health workers, community health workers, and the strong team at the Ministry of Health.

These teams, she stated, work tirelessly to protect public health.

“I dedicate this award to my family, the people of Lira City, and the over 45.9 million supportive Ugandans.”
