The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) issued a statement on Saturday following the murder of Dr Olila Wilfred.
Dr Olila, according to reports, went missing from home. When that happened, he was unable to be located.
Unfortunately, he was found dead in Otuboi, on the Soroti-Lira highway. He worked as a surgeon at Lira Regional Referral Hospital and a lecturer at Soroti University in Soroti before his untimely death.
The deceased was the founder and director of Moroto Clinic in Lira City, having graduated from Makerere University in 1984 and 2008, respectively.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our cherished senior colleague, Dr. Wilfred Olila.
“Dr. Olila was brutalized and left for dead. His lifeless body was discovered by the Otuboi Police, left by the roadside, with a UMA T-shirt serving as the only identifier.
“Dr. Olila graduated from Makerere University in 1984 with an MBChB and went on to earn an MMed in ENT from the same institution in 2008.
“His contributions extended far beyond clinical practice; he was a visionary involved in various private initiatives and a dedicated lecturer at Soroti University.
“U.M.A, the medical community, and the entire nation have lost a remarkable treasure, an individual who epitomized service, compassion, and dedication.
“We strongly condemn the violent attacks on doctors, who selflessly dedicate their lives to saving others. This act of brutality against a healer, who stood as a beacon of hope for countless lives, is a grave injustice. As a community, we stand united in demanding respect and protection for our noble profession!
“Our hearts go out to Dr. Olila’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May they find strength and solace during this difficult time.
“May Dr. Olila Wilfred’s soul rest in eternal peace.
“U.M.A NEC”
