Oyam I Each item donated by Oyam South MP Betty Amongi is paid for by the recipients, tndNews was told.
Throughout her tenure as their representative in Parliament, some constituents claim that any items she has donated are paid for before they take them home.
They have told this publication that they are asked to pay at least shs3000 through their MP’s agents for hoes, gomesi, and solar sets. For hoes, the amount is shs5,000.
She is still popular in Oyam South, according to locals, and some want her to return there rather than Lira City in 2026.
Those who spoke with tndNews in Adel and St. Thomas, Minakulu, had varying reactions to her decision to leave before 2026.
“This is a bad decision. Although she is legally required to compete anywhere, choosing Lira City will result in regrets.
“We have been proud to have her represent us as our own from here,” said a top politician in Minakulu sub-county who did not want to be identified.
“In Minakulu, she has a large following. “I will try to contact her and explain why Oyam South is still the best constituency for her,” he revealed.
Olot Bosco, 25, said he would like to see Amongi return to Oyam South in 2026 because she is their own. “My MP, Betty, needs to reconsider her decision. Dr. Aceng is her sister; they are all from Oyam. Unfortunately, they might collide in 2026.”
Political leaders, women, and youth from Aber and Loro sub-counties have also expressed concern about Amongi’s politics and her decision to relocate to Lira City before her elective term in Oyam South ends.
“Amongi knows that Lango is easy to bribe. Actually, in my opinion, Amongi should keep deceiving people. She understands that working for Lango is pointless, whereas giving them small gifts is a direct vote,” Isaah Otto Amiza, former Oyam South MP, said a fortnight ago.
Ebu Selestino of Bobi Cell, Atek Ward, Minakulu Town Council, stated that MP Amongi abandoned them as orphans. “She thinks Oyam South is ugly now, and she wants to move somewhere better. It is up to her if she crashes from there.”
Francis Okidi, disability chairperson for Atek parish in Minakulu town council, stated that they had raised their concerns with their MP and Gender Minister Amongi, but no action was taken.
Okidi stated that the inaction of their MP and Minister of Gender should not be tolerated because it will slow down service delivery.
Listen to what the constituents of Kamdini, Minakulu, and Myene sub-counties had to say.
Not bothered
Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, who is known for her candour, told tndNews in June 2023 that Betty Amongi will never bother her. “After all, some people did not expect me to win the Lira City Woman MP in the first place during my maiden approach.”
“…leaders are chosen by God for a reason and a season…,” Dr Aceng said, before quoting from the Book of Isaiah 40:31 which says, “…but those that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength……”
It won’t be easy!
Meanwhile, in recent media interviews in Lira City, Amongi stated that nobody can stop her city’s political mission.
As she moves, some Oyam South constituents believe she will struggle to “win the masses” in Lira City if she continues to work with self-centered “political proxies.”
These proxies, they claim, have been charging “high amounts” for any donations made by MP Amongi to benefit the locals.
For several days, attempts to contact her and some of her political agents in Oyam South regarding charges on donation reports were unsuccessful.
