NRM criticizes Angweri Lira City MP seat declaration

Lira| Sarah Awor’s announcement that she would run for Lira City woman MP in 2026 has drawn criticism from dozens of NRM cadres in the Lango sub-region.

Awor, widely known as Angweri, announced last month that she would like to challenge MP Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, beginning with the party primary election.

Angweri, who represents Lira City workers on the City Council, announced in November that she will not run for local office in 2026. This indicates that she desires political advancement.

Members of her NRM party have voiced opposition to her interest.

Speaking to the media on Sunday at the St Lira Hotel, a group of senior NRM cadres said Awor’s decision to run is an act of sabotage against NRM manifesto implementers like Minister Aceng.

Jonal Okot, Assistant Resident District Commissioner for Apac, stated that as senior cadres trained to implement the NRM manifesto, it is their responsibility to implement, preach, and identify suitable candidates.

Okot stated that these individuals will contribute to the improvement of good governance.

“A senior NRM party member like Dr. Aceng must be backed and supported in all ways for being a great agent of change; for the well-being of people,” he said.

“We cannot allow an opportunist like Awor, who is ideologically bankrupt, to disorganize us; she is not a party member and is only being used by those seeking to challenge our hero, Dr. Aceng.”

Okot accuses Oyam South MP Betty Amongi of fronting Awor against Dr. Aceng for her political gains.

Patrick Okwir, another senior carder from Lira City, stated that they cannot support a non-performer like Awor, saying, “We do not know her as a party member.”

Okwir stated that as cadres, they assist in identifying and recruiting potential candidates to promote the party’s ideology and core principles of wealth creation, patriotism, and democracy, among others, which Awor lacks.

“We have seen goodness in Aceng and are endorsing her for 2026.”

Solomon Okello, another cader from Oyam district, stated that Aceng’s contributions, along with those of other senior NRM members such as Denis Hamson Obua and  Atim Apea, have helped Lango rise to prominence.

Okello stated that they are constantly supporting and mobilizing for the aforementioned politicians to continue implementing the NRM manifesto.

George Okot, a senior NRM member, stated that those speaking out against Minister Dr. Aceng are anti-development.

“As party members, we do not know Sarah Awor; she is not one of us. Let her first register as a member, and we will see where we can place her.”

Okot added that Angweri does not represent a significant threat, suggesting that her candidacy is more of a strategy for gaining attention rather than a serious challenge.

Meanwhile, Awor has stated that no one will prevent her from exercising her “constitutional right”.

“I want to say that those who oppose me will be wasting their time. I have held a number of consultations, and people are behind me in my decision.”
