Awor Angweri: Lira City vocal councilor to enjoy festivities while on remand

Lira Magistrate Court has remanded Lira City Council’s female workers’ councillor to government prison for inciting violence against city council officials.

Sarah Awor Angweri appeared in court on Thursday, but refused to plead guilty.

The vocal local politician appeared before Magistrate Joe Fey Adoko, who remanded her to the Lira Central government prison until January 9, 2025.

Her court appearance came after she was arrested alongside Daniel Okello, the Council Speaker of the Lira City West division, who is now bedridden.

Lira City West Police Division arrested the pair on charges of inciting violence against officials.

According to the prosecution, in violation of Section 791 of the Penal Code Act Cap. 128, Awor, a 40-year-old resident of Kirombe North A Cell, and Daniel Okello alias Allan, 34, incited violence against Emmy Lawrence Egole, the Lira City Resident City Commissioner.

During an inspection of the Adyel Children’s Park, Junior Quarters, the two allegedly incited the public to attack Egole and his team.

Through the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) project, the World Bank is providing funding for the multimillion park’s construction.

The incitement occurred on December 17, 2024, and the police were forced to calm the situation before arresting the pair.

Okello was admitted to the hospital after his arrest and did not appear in court on Thursday.

North Kyoga Regional Police PRO, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema stated that Okello is being monitored by medics.

Meanwhile, Joel Magala, the state prosecutor, presented a letter from Okello informing the court that he was unable to appear in court due to illness.

However, the prosecutor informed the court that the investigation into the case had been completed and that everything was ready for hearing.
