Lira |The government, through the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, has distributed 146 motorcycles to cities and districts across the country.

The bikes are expected to improve the execution of the World Bank-funded project Generating Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women-led Enterprises (GROW).

Betty Amongi, Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, presented the motorcycles to the designated GROW focal point persons at a ceremony in the ministry’s main boardroom on November 5, 2024.

Amongi emphasized that these motorcycles are intended to facilitate effective monitoring and supervision of project activities, ensuring they are conducted in a timely and efficient manner.

She urged the focal point persons to use the motorcycles for their intended purpose, which is to mobilise, facilitate, and oversee the project’s implementation.

“We aim to ensure that micro, small, and medium businesses receive essential support in the form of affordable skills training, capital, and product certification to foster their growth,” she added.

GROW is a government of Uganda initiative designed to meet the needs of women entrepreneurs looking to expand their businesses, maintain self-employment, and create new job opportunities.

The project’s development goal is to improve access to entrepreneurial services that will enable female entrepreneurs to expand their businesses in targeted areas, including refugee-hosting districts.

This week, women entrepreneurs in Lira City expressed concerns about the project, citing the need for collateral that they are unable to provide in order to secure funding.

With annual interest rates ranging from 10 to 10.5 percent, borrowers can obtain amounts ranging from shs4 million to shs200 million.
