Police in Serere district are investigating the tragic death of Atigo Melda, 75, a peasant from Ariet village, Omagoro parish, Kyere sub-county.
The incident occurred on September 19, around 3 p.m., at the above location.
Okalebo Martin reported the suspected murder to Serere CPS under the case number CRB 478/2024. Okalebo, the reporter, is the LC1 chairperson of Ariet village, Omagoro parish.
It is claimed that on September 19, in the afternoon, the suspect, Emitu Solomon, 30, went to pick tamarind, also known as “apedur” seeds, from a tree in their ancestral land.
The deceased attempted to stop the suspect, who happened to be her nephew. However, the suspect became irritated and went home, picked up a panga, returned, pursued the elderly woman, and cut her on the neck. Unfortunately, she died immediately.
When neighbours realized what had happened, they began running after the suspect, but their efforts were futile.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered that Atigo Melda had died.
The body of the deceased was transported to Serere Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination, which is expected to shed light on the cause of death.
ASP Obukulem Edison, acting PRO of the East Kyoga Region, said no arrests had been made as of press time, and the suspect, Emitu Solomon, remained at large.
“However, our police in Serere have launched a manhunt for him, and we urge the public to come forward with any information that could lead to his arrest.”
“We strongly advise against all forms of violence. However, we would like to encourage anyone who feels threatened to seek help immediately either from the local authorities or particularly the police so that they can be resolved in a peaceful manner,” said Obukulem.
“…we want to assure the victim’s family that we are committed to delivering justice for Atigo Melda and are working tirelessly to hold the suspect accountable for his actions.”
“We will keep you updated as the investigation progresses.”
