Soroti | For the first time since the 2021 elections and their elevation to their respective positions, Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among and Vice President Jessica Alupo held a public rally in Teso.
The region’s most prominent figures have been engaged in a cold war, not verbally, but through their actions.
On record, the two have never attended a Teso function together, whether it was attended by the President, other government officials, or cultural dignitaries.
The Speaker was noticeably absent from the recent National Women’s Day celebrations in Katakwi district, which were attended by President Museveni as the Chief Guest.
The cold war between these two prominent women has spread to Members of Parliament, influencing their loyalty in the region.
This division has been visible at a number of functions, with MPs aligned with one attending events she hosted.
At the National Museum Day in Soroti City, attended by the Vice President, there was no sign of the Speaker. Similarly, at the Emorimor Anniversary, where the Vice President was Chief Guest, fewer than five MPs attended.
The rift between the two has drawn attention from voters and other leaders, who have publicly commented on their discord.
During the burial of the former Executive Director of NEMA in Kumi district, His Royal Highness, Chief Paul Sande Emolot of the Iteso Cultural Union, expressed concern about their behaviour and urged them to resolve their differences and show solidarity with one another and the region.
The people of Teso’s cries appear to have been heard, as the two came together and hugged in front of the congregation during the priestly and diaconate ordination ceremony at Regina Caeli Cathedral in the Soroti Catholic diocese.
In his opening homily, Bishop Joseph Eciru Oliach of the Soroti Catholic Diocese emphasised the day’s uniqueness, which was attended by himself, Bishop Dominic Eibu of the Kotido Catholic Diocese, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Vice President.
We will continue to monitor this situation to see if the two are truly united or if it is just for show.
