Tycoon Etwop Geoffrey and ‘falsehood’

Lira | On Friday afternoon, Lira’s top tycoon Etwop Geoffrey was arraigned before the Chief Magistrates Court in Lira City.

He is accused of fraudulent procurement of a certificate of title.

Etwop was earlier arrested by a team of Police officers at the State House Anti-corruption Unit and Criminal Investigations Department.

It is alleged that Etwop, between 2017 and 2020, presented a letter dated December 23, 2019, to the district land board and Lira Ministry Zonal Office among other land application documents purporting that the Physical Planning Committee of then Lira Municipal Council had approved his application.

The approved application, Etwop claimed granted him a freehold title for Plot 16-18 Soroti Road, Camp Swahili Central Division under minute number LMC PPC 083/12/2019.

The prosecution found the above claim “was not true”.

The land in question is a public open space, according to the approved Physical Plan of Lira Municipal Council 2016-2026.

The accused appeared before Chief Magistrate, Abiti Samson Loum.

Through his lawyer Robert Irumba of Tian and Company advocates, the accused asked for bail.

Counsel Irumba asked the court to bail his client since the alleged offence is bailable and that he has a constitutional right to bail.

In his application for bail, Irumba presented four sureties and told the court that his client is a law-abiding citizen who has never jumped a Police bond and that Etwop is of advanced age.

The request for bail was denied and the suspect was remanded to Lira government prison until February 5, 2024.

The suspect is the treasurer of the NRM party for Lira district. He is also the awitong (clan leader), politician and popular businessman in Lira City.
