Macodwogo murder: “Stay calm,” Prime Minister Nabbanja tells Lango

Lira, May 9, 2023: The government has accorded an official State burial for the former State Minister of Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, Col. Rtd. Charles Okello Engola Macodwogo.

Engola, who until his murder on May 2, 2023, was the Oyam North MP, in Oyam district. 

In an exclusive interview with Premier Robinah Nabbanja, the directive to accord official state burial was revealed by the Minister of Presidency Milly Babirye Babalanda shortly after visiting the home of the Late in Kyanja, a Kampala suburb. 

According to Nabbanja, Minister Babalanda will coordinate the burial program in collaboration with the family led by the Minister of Gender Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi.

As per the government program, the fallen Minister will be taken to Parliament on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, for the August House to eulogize and pay their last respects.

A national prayer will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, with President Museveni as the chief mourner.

The above event will take place at the Kololo ceremonial grounds, in Kampala.

Further, the community of Oyam and Lango at large will on Friday hold a funeral service for the late at St. Nathan Church of Uganda in Awangi, Iceme sub-county where the body will also lie for mourners to pay their last respects. 

On Saturday, May 13, 2023, the burial will take place starting with the funeral service at Acet Primary School in Iceme sub-county.

“First of all on behalf of the government I want to regret and also condole with the people of Lango for the loss of your son, for the loss of our brother Late Macodwogo who was gunned down by his bodyguard,” said Nabbanja, Monday.

“The Late Macodwogo was very close to me. As you recall, sometime back we were together in Lira when the President had delegated me and him to see to it that the Balalo that were terrorising our people in northern Uganda are removed, which work we did very well with Macodwogo. So, I knew him…”

“… I want to request the people of Lango to remain calm so we can request God to give our brother a peaceful rest,” Prime Minister to Lango. 

TND News understands that there will be a joint council meeting on Thursday by all the districts, and city and municipality councils in Lango sub-region at Oyam Boma Ground.
