Lira – July 18, 2022: Development Initiative for Northern Uganda (DINU) is currently implementing two projects in the Lango sub-region. The beneficiary districts are Kole and Otuke.

DINU is working alongside United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and the funding partners are the European Union (EU).

With a budgetary allocation of € 26 million [approximately shs103b], this flagship programme was designed to amalgamate stability in Northern Uganda, eradicate poverty and under-nutrition and strengthen the foundations for sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development.

A total of 33 districts [with over 7 million people] are beneficiaries.

According to the available information, the objective of the programme is to reduce the development gap between Northern Uganda and the rest of the country by focusing on three areas: nutrition and food security, road infrastructure, and good governance.

In Otuke district, a business center expected to drive local revenue is due for commissioning. The more than shs1.7b facility shall house two commercial banks, two pharmacies, a conference hall, and a shopping arcade, TND News has learned.

Similarly, in Bala Town Council, Kole district, a modern market with 80 stalls, a breastfeeding room, and a children’s play area is being constructed.

The two business centers, DINU says are under the Office of the Prime Minister-DINU local excellency fund implemented by UNCDF.

The total cost for the Bala facility is shs400m and will be ready next month [August].

Phoebe Ajok, a trader in Lira City but born in Otuke district tells this publication “it’s a development closer to the grassroots”.

“Doing business, especially for us dealing in perishable items needs a facility with proper housing [roof] and storage. I think DINU will do more,” she added.
