Covid-19: 1.1m people in Teso to be vaccinated – says Dr. Aceng

Soroti – November 9, 2021: The Ministry of Health has launched mass vaccination against coronavirus in Teso sub region.

Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, the Health Minister says Teso was considered looking at the increasing new cases coming from the region.

She reveals that over 1.1 million in the next one week, adding that Teso is currently the “hotspots region country wide”.

The region has so far had 2,093 accumulative cases; 202 deaths with 35 in the first wave and 177 in the second wave, respectively. Soroti Regional Referral Hospital gave this data.

The current admission at Soroti Hospital stands at 35 patients, contributing 25% of the country’s national figure of 165.

Dr. Michael Mwanga, the Soroti Hospital Director reveals that at the peak of the second wave their Covid was receiving between 80 to 100 admissions per day.

He acknowledged that the second wave hit them seriously with Soroti and Kumi districts registering higher cases. Bukedea and Kapelebyong registered fewest admissions, he said.

Dr. John Wilson Etolu who is the coronavirus focal point person in Teso sub region commended government for supporting them besides alarming numbers.

He applauded the health team for “job well done” to the extent that no medical staff succumbed to Covid-19 in the region.

Etolu hints that to counter the virus, they have set up a 24 hour monitoring unit for Covid patients.

“The facility is still challenged with lack of functional intensives care unit and oxygen plant since the available ones broke down,” he added on Tuesday.

Moses Okia Attan, Member of Parliament Soroti City East Division tasked the hospital administration to use them and Parliament as an institution for lobbying.

Attan asked the Minister to give Soroti Hospital “a special attention” since it’s the only limping regional facility.

He also challenged the Minister to support the supplementary budget before Parliament, and allocate shs8bn for purchase of the scan machine. This is lacking in the hospital.
