UN chief, Guterres condemns Conde’s overthrow

UN chief, Guterres has directed the immediate release of Conde by the military

Conakry, 5, September 2021: The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) has condemned the Sunday military coup in Guinea.

Antonio Gueterres made his feeling known Sunday via Twitter. He wrote:

“I am personally following the situation in Guinea very closely. I strongly condemn any takeover of the government by force of the gun and call for the immediate release of President Alpha Conde.”

Alpha has been removed from power by the military and now under house arrest.

Reuters say soldiers who staged an uprising in Guinea’s capital on Sunday said “they had dissolved the nation’s constitution”.

Fighting broke out near the presidential palace Sunday and mutiny was led by Mamady Doumbouya, according to Reuters.

The West African nation’s economy somewhat was stable under Conde. It’s rich in iron ore, gold, bauxite and diamond.
