Abalo Abiya’s nomination to Gulu DSC rejected for her role in land wrangles
Gulu – 20, August 2021: Gulu district councilors have objected the nomination of Mrs. Abalo Christine Abiya to the Gulu district service commission (DSC) on Thursday. This happens during the “emergency full council meeting” at the Gulu district council hall.
After the presentation of the names of nominees by the district chairperson Christopher Opiyo Ateker for approval, councilor objected Abalo.
“I present to you the following as nominees to the Gulu district service commission, Mrs. Abalo Christine Abiya from Awach sub county, Mr. Moro Charles Lumumba from Owalo sub county, Mr. Okullu Alfred Dako – Kati from Patiko Sub County and Mr. Oket – Keny Philips the serving chairperson Gulu district service commission,” he told the House.
Denish Lakwonyero, a councilor representing persons living with disabilities rose up and objected the proposal and nomination of Mrs. Abalo Christine Abiya with reasons that Abalo was involved in land wrangles in Awach Sub County.
“I object to the nomination of Mrs. Abalo Christine Abiya because she is not worthy to be in the commission, because one needs to be of good moral, integrity and character,” Lakwonyero he told the House.
He added that, “Abalo has indulged herself in land wrangles in Awach Sub County, the proposed district headquarter hence she cannot be vetted.”
Lalam Lillian Stella, a female councilor representing people of Awach and Pukony said Mrs. Abalo Christine Abiya is not worthy to be nominated to the district service commission because she is a lady who has indulged herself in numerous land wrangles within the Sub County of Awach.
She further noted that appointing her to the commission will show that the council did not mind about the moral, character and good background of a person when nominating him or her to serve the people.
“The vetting of Mrs. Abalo to the commission shows that the District Executive Committee does not know exactly who Abalo is,” noted Lalam.
The objection of Mrs. Abalo led to a serious confusion and arguments amongst the councilors but at last the Speaker opted for a poll where 26 councilors voted and 12 voted in favor of Mrs. Abalo and 14 voted against her.
This drove the Speaker to conclude for the immediate replacement and fresh nominee to be presented before the council within one week.
However, the following were seconded to the district service commission Mr. Moro Charles Lumumba from Owalo sub county, Mr. Okullu Alfred Dako – Kati from Patiko Sub County and Mr. Oket – Keny Philips the serving chairperson Gulu district service commission.
