Dokolo – 2, May 2021: Lango United Journalist Association (LUJA) is a body that governs the works of journalist in Lango sub-region. It has asked journalists and their media houses to celebrate World Press Freedom Day (WPFD2021) at “their will” due to Covid-19 pandemic.
WPFD is annually celebrated on the 3rd May. Hudson Apunyo, the secretary general of LUJA said much as there is no joint celebration for all Lango journalists, different media houses can organize their own celebrations while observing Covid-19 SOPs.
According to Apunyo, the glorious source of wealth for journalists in Lango is togetherness and working as a team so that other institutions can respect the voice of journalists.
Speaking to our Dokolo Town-based correspondent on Sunday, different journalists reacted that government should also appreciate their works.
Morish Michael Odongo, the news editor at 89.0 FM Radio North in Alebtong district, said that much as journalists (media) is ranked as the fourth arm of the government, media still faces challenges of low respect especially by some government agencies.
Kenneth Ongom, an employee at Radio Apac appreciated radio listeners, and government particularly for involving journalists in their daily work of development, citing Emyooga fund that is on the way, according to him.
Meanwhile, Michael Onyinge, a correspondent with New Vision in Teso sub-region asked journalists to always do what can positively change the members of the community.
He adds that the culprit of criminal related stories should not hate journalists but repent after the news is published.
Taibot Marko, the West Nile’s regional coordinator for Human Right Network for Journalist Uganda appealed to all Ugandans to respect the rights of journalist during their daily work.
