Dr Kizza Besigye: “We’ve lost a great leader & mother figure.
Lira – 30, March 2021: Eulogies and announcement: Death has occurred of Imat Mary Okullo Bega of Angwetangwet, Lira City. Imat Mary died in the early hours of Tuesday at the home of her nephew Hon. P. P Okin in Kampala. She arrived in Kampala last evening for a scheduled medical review at Mulago National Referral Hospital and was to see her Doctor this morning (Tuesday) – Mr Joel Okao Tema, FDC supporter and a renowned politician in Lango announces.
“Imat Mary Okullo Bega was born in Kitgum district in a staunch UPC family and was married to Mzee Charles Okullo Bega, a Rtd. Police Officer who comes from Akaoidebe, Ayac Parish, Amach Town Council. She quit UPC in 2005 and became the bedrock of FDC in Lango but kept an open mind and supported candidates from different political parties according to their competencies,” Mr Okao adds (eulogizes).
He concludes: “Burial arrangements will be announced later.”
Hon. Beatrice Lagada, a senior politician and a member of ruling NRM party says: “Such a strong political activist Mary was! May the Father God comfort the family.”
Mr Nickson Ogwal, a human rights activist said of the deceased: “Big loss. Imat Mary was a political matriarch in Lira City, who lived a fearless life by speaking her mind for the benefit of the society. She was also a very important bond in northern Uganda across our ethnicities.”
“Imat Mary Okullu-bega, rest in peace,” he adds.
Hon. Ishaa Otto Amiza, former Oyam South MP said: “Very sorry indeed. I recalled the last political meeting at her residence in Angwetangwet, together with colleagues, in FDC. She will be dearly missed.”

Also, Dr Kizza Besigye, the first party president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), a political party the deceased was dedicatedly attached to until her death, had this to say via Twitter, Tuesday:
“Death robbed us, today, early morning, of Imat Mary Okullo (Mama FDC) a resident of Angwetangwet, Lira City.
“Imat Mary arrived in Kla last evening & spent the night at Hon Okin P.P Ojara’s home. She suddenly passed on early this morning.
“We’ve lost a great leader & mother figure.
