Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has issued a strong warning to National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, declaring that the opposition politician will never be allowed to contest another election in Uganda. His remarks have reignited debate about political competition, freedom of expression and the future of opposition politics in the country.

According to Pulse Uganda, Muhoozi made the declaration in a post on X on September 27, 2026, referring to the opposition leader as “Kabobi.” The military chief’s message was direct, leaving little room for doubt about his stated position on Kyagulanyi’s participation in future elections.

“Kabobi will never be allowed to stand in another election in Uganda again,” Muhoozi wrote, issuing a statement that is likely to attract strong reactions from supporters of both the ruling establishment and the opposition.

The CDF went further by describing Kyagulanyi as a “foreign puppet,” pointing to the opposition leader’s departure from Uganda following the January presidential election. Muhoozi criticised the move abroad and used it to justify his opposition to Kyagulanyi participating in future political contests.

“He proved he is a foreign puppet when he run abroad 10 days after the last elections. We will never let that clown stand for anything in Uganda again. Never!” Muhoozi added in the post, according to the report.

Kyagulanyi, who leads the National Unity Platform, has become one of the most prominent challengers to President Yoweri Museveni. He contested against Museveni in the 2021 and 2026 presidential elections, mobilising significant support among voters who have called for political change.

Muhoozi’s declaration has raised questions about the role of the military in Uganda’s political affairs and whether any individual can be prevented from contesting elections outside the constitutional and legal processes. Under Uganda’s electoral system, eligibility to contest for public office is governed by the Constitution and relevant laws, while electoral disputes and disqualifications are subject to established procedures.

The latest remarks place Bobi Wine’s political future back in the spotlight and are likely to intensify discussion about political freedoms, competition and the treatment of opposition figures. However, Muhoozi’s statement alone does not constitute a formal legal decision barring Kyagulanyi from standing in another election. Any such restriction would need to be considered through the applicable constitutional and legal framework.
