Veterans commended for allowing children to join UPDF

Reserve Force

The Commander of the UPDF Reserve Force, Maj Gen Joseph Ssemwanga, concluded his commanders’ tour of the Teso, Elgon and Busoga sub-regions, where he appreciated veterans for their contribution to Uganda’s defence and security by allowing their children to join the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF).

During the tour, Ssemwanga commended the veterans for the sacrifices they made during their service and for continuing to support the country’s security efforts by encouraging their children to serve in the armed forces.

He urged the veterans to take pride in their children’s decision to join the UPDF and called upon them to welcome and support the soldiers whenever they return to their communities, particularly after completing their military duties.

Maj Gen Ssemwanga emphasised that military service should not create a divide between soldiers and their families or communities.

Instead, the communities should recognise their sons and daughters serving in the UPDF as part of their own, offering them the necessary support, acceptance and encouragement.

He noted that veterans remain important stakeholders in national security because of their experience, knowledge and influence within their communities.

Their continued involvement in guiding young people and promoting peaceful coexistence, he said, is essential to strengthening the relationship between the UPDF and the population.

The Reserve Force Commander also encouraged veterans to use their experience to mentor the younger generation, promote discipline and patriotism, and contribute to community development.

He observed that the relationship between the military and the population is strengthened when families and communities appreciate the responsibilities of soldiers and provide them with a supportive environment when they return home.

The commanders’ tour of Teso, Elgon and Busoga also provided an opportunity to engage with veterans and regional commanders on matters concerning the welfare of veterans, the role of the Reserve Force and the importance of maintaining strong relationships between the UPDF and the communities it serves.

The UPDF Reserve Force plays an important role in supporting national defence while maintaining links with veterans and communities across the country.

Through continued engagement, the force seeks to strengthen the contribution of former service personnel and promote a shared responsibility for Uganda’s peace and security.

Maj Gen Ssemwanga’s tour concluded with a call for veterans and communities to remain supportive of the men and women who choose to serve their country, recognising their service as a contribution to the safety, stability and future of Uganda.
