The Ugandan government has initiated steps to secure an additional 600 acres of land in Wakiso District to support the expansion of Dei BioPharma Limited, a pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing company. The proposed expansion is aimed at increasing local production of advanced medicines, vaccines and specialised therapies, with the ambition of serving both Uganda’s domestic market and international customers.

The land targeted for the project is located in Gombe Division, Nansana Municipality, covering areas around Wabitembe, Kiryowa and Kigoogwa villages. The proposed acquisition is expected to provide space for new production facilities and related infrastructure as the company seeks to increase its manufacturing capacity.

Speaking during a community meeting attended by residents and senior government officials, Dei BioPharma founder Dr Matthias Magoola explained that the additional land was crucial to the company’s expansion plans. He said the space would enable the establishment of new production lines and support the development of pharmaceutical products intended for wider markets.

One of the major objectives of the expansion is to help the company meet strict international manufacturing standards required to export medicines to markets such as the United States. Pharmaceutical exports require manufacturers to meet demanding requirements relating to product quality, safety, production processes and regulatory compliance.

The proposed project could contribute to Uganda’s efforts to strengthen its pharmaceutical manufacturing industry and reduce reliance on imported medicines. Expanding local production may also create opportunities for skilled employment, technical training and investment in scientific research, although the scale of these benefits will depend on how the project is implemented.

The initiative also highlights the importance of land in supporting large industrial developments. However, acquiring an additional 600 acres in populated areas requires careful engagement with affected communities, particularly residents whose land or livelihoods could be affected. Clear information about compensation, land ownership, relocation arrangements where necessary and the acquisition process will be important as the plans progress.

For the government, supporting pharmaceutical manufacturing forms part of the broader discussion about industrialisation, economic development and building Uganda’s capacity to produce higher-value goods. If the expansion meets its objectives, it could strengthen the country’s position in the regional pharmaceutical sector and create opportunities to supply medicines beyond its borders.

The proposed acquisition marks a significant step in the plans to expand Dei BioPharma’s operations in Wakiso, but further details about the implementation timeline, investment value, compensation arrangements and expected employment numbers have not been provided in the information available. As the process continues, the project’s progress and its impact on surrounding communities will be important issues to follow.
