Lira Catholic Diocese has ordained 11 deacons to priesthood and 8 seminarians were elevated to the diaconate in a grand ceremony held at the ordination grounds of Lira Cathedral on August 6.
The colourful and spiritually significant event was presided over by the Bishop of Lira Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, who led the faithful through the sacred rites that mark a major milestone in the life of the Catholic Church.
The ceremony drew thousands of worshippers from Lira City and different deaneries across the diocese, with many arriving very early to witness the historic occasion.
In his homily, Bishop Wanok called on the newly ordained priests and deacons to remain steadfast in their vocation, urging them to serve with humility, discipline, and total commitment to God’s mission.
He reminded them that priesthood and diaconate are not positions of honour but callings that demand sacrifice, obedience, and compassion.
“You are being sent out to serve the people of God. Lead with love, stand for truth, and remain faithful even in times of difficulty,” the Bishop said, as he addressed the ordinands during the solemn ceremony.
The Bishop further encouraged them to be role models in their communities, promoting unity, peace, and moral integrity at a time when society faces various challenges.
He emphasised the need for clergy to remain close to the people, especially the vulnerable, and to uphold the teachings of the Church without compromise.
The ordination ceremony was graced by several high ranking people, including Eng. Moses Michael Odongo Okune, the leader of Tekwaro Lango, and Minister of Disaster Sam Engola. Both joined senior clergy, religious leaders, and invited guests in witnessing the event.
Also in attendance were priests from across the diocese, religious sisters, seminarians, and lay leaders who gathered in solidarity and celebration. The ordination ground was filled beyond capacity, with choirs leading hymns that created a vibrant and uplifting atmosphere throughout the ceremony.
Families, relatives, and friends of the ordinands expressed pride and joy as they watched their loved ones take a significant step in their spiritual journey.
Some described the moment as a dream come true, highlighting the years of formation, sacrifice, and dedication that culminated in the ordination.
The rite of ordination, marked by the laying on of hands and prayers of consecration, symbolised the official admission of the candidates into sacred ministry.
The newly ordained priests are now entrusted with responsibilities such as celebrating mass, administering sacraments, and guiding the faithful, while the deacons will assist in liturgical functions and charitable works as they continue their journey towards priesthood.
For the Diocese, the ordination represents not only the growth of the Church but also renewed hope in nurturing spiritual leaders who will serve communities with dedication and integrity.
It also highlights the continued commitment of the Church to evangelization and pastoral care in the region.
As the ceremony concluded, the newly ordained clergy received blessings and congratulations from the faithful, marking the beginning of their lifelong mission to serve God and humanity.
