Local Government Minister Hon Balaam has opened up about his simple lifestyle, saying his approach to money and personal choices was shaped by years of business experience and learning the value of hard work.
Balaam explained that despite holding a government position, he does not believe in unnecessary spending and prefers to remain disciplined with his resources. He said his current lifestyle reflects lessons he learnt while struggling and building his career.
Responding to questions from people who often comment about his dressing style, Balaam said wearing one shirt repeatedly is not a sign of failure but a personal choice based on convenience and practicality.
“Many of you kept asking why do you wear one shirt? Because the process of drying it becomes easier. You wash it in the evening, by morning it is ready,” Balaam said.
The minister explained that his decisions are influenced by his background and experiences, adding that important values such as humility and discipline do not come from expensive clothes or appearances.
“What we speak does not come from the ties, but I respect the protocols of the August House,” he said, emphasising that a person’s ideas and contribution should not be judged by their dressing.
Balaam said his journey has been shaped by many challenges, especially during the years when he was trying to balance education, business and personal responsibilities.

He revealed that while pursuing his studies, he was also involved in different businesses that demanded his attention and affected the speed at which he completed his education.
“I did a course of four years. It took me seven years to finish because I was running a canteen, running a business, running everything,” he said.
The minister explained that unlike some students who had full support and enough time to concentrate on academics, he had to divide his time between studying and finding ways to support himself.
He said the struggles he experienced during that period helped shape his character and gave him a deeper understanding of responsibility, hard work and perseverance.
According to Balaam, every stage of his life contributed to the person he is today, including the difficulties he faced while trying to establish himself.
He said his business background taught him important lessons about managing money and avoiding wasteful spending, values he continues to apply in his public life.
Balaam noted that people often judge success by outward appearance, but true achievement is built through discipline, knowledge and the ability to overcome challenges.
His remarks have sparked discussions among members of the public, with some praising his simple approach while others debating the lifestyle expected of government officials.
The minister maintained that his choice to live simply does not affect his ability to perform his duties or represent Ugandans in government.

He said leaders should focus more on serving people and delivering results rather than spending resources trying to impress others through material possessions.
Balaam’s comments also highlighted his personal journey from a businessman balancing multiple responsibilities to becoming a government official.
He said the experiences he gained while running businesses and pursuing education gave him practical knowledge about the struggles faced by ordinary Ugandans.

The minister encouraged young people not to be discouraged by difficult beginnings, saying challenges can become important lessons that prepare them for future opportunities.
He added that success does not always come quickly and that patience, determination and discipline are important qualities for anyone seeking to achieve their goals.
Balaam concluded by saying that his story is a reminder that people should value their journey and understand that personal growth comes from both achievements and struggles along the way.
