Amolatar | Residents of Alyet parish in Aputi sub-county, Amolatar district, are in panic and financial distress following a four-day exercise aimed at cleansing the village of “terrorising charms.”

The operation, which ended on Sunday, has left “a massive bill” many families are struggling to pay.

Patrick Okwir, the LC1 chairperson for Olongoping village in Alyet, confirmed that “the community is now in turmoil.”

According to Okwir, the witchdoctor hired to conduct the clean-up of the village is demanding five hundred thousand shillings (shs500,000) from every household where a charm was found.

In addition, anyone suspected of practicing witchcraft faces a hefty fine of three million shillings (shs3m).

“The witch doctor wants shs500,000 from families with charms, and shs3 million from the suspects,” he told tndNews, Uganda.

This heavy financial burden has sparked widespread outrage among residents. Many are fighting back, demanding that the witch doctor publicly reveal the identities of those who introduced the evil charms into their community.

When contacted, the witch doctor, identified as Baruku Jamesi, stood firm on his pricing structure, insisting that the affected households and accused parties settle the charges for his services.

However, as tensions in the community escalated through Sunday, police stepped in.

Law enforcement has officially suspended all payments to the witch doctor and called for a community meeting to diffuse the volatile situation before it turns violent.

Amolatar RDC Okello Odoki Francis—who had previously banned all prayer warriors and witch doctors operating under the guise of removing charms in the district—has ordered the immediate arrest of Baruku Jamesi.

Authorities hope this decisive action will restore order and bring relief to the distressed residents of Alyet parish.
