On February 26 at 10am, the Lira Regional Referral Hospital security team working closely with the Uganda Police Force arrested Okello Moses from the female surgical ward.
Okello, impersonating a medical officer at the hospital, defrauded shs200,000 from a patient’s caregiver.
He claimed that the money would expedite medical services and surgery.
Okello hoodwinked the unsuspecting caregiver and solicited a total of shs500,000 which he said would facilitate a “quick medical procedure,” a statement released by the hospital reads.
The suspect reportedly insisted that he be given a deposit of Shs 200,000 before working on the patient, and the remaining balance be paid later.
Unfortunately for a fake health worker, the caregiver reported the matter to the hospital’s security team who alerted the police leading to his arrest immediately after receiving the money.
A case of theft of cash and impersonation has been registered at Lira City Central Police Station under reference 32/26/02/2026.
LRRH said: “We shall collaborate with the police and render all necessary support to ensure that justice is served.”
“The management would like to inform the public that within the month of February, 2026, we have arrested more than 5 people under similar circumstances.”
