In a significant political move ahead of the 2026-2031 general elections, Walter Alungu, a long-time member of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), on November 13, officially crossed over to the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Alungu not only crossed to join the moving bus but has fully backed Jane Frances Acilo’s bid for Woman Member of Parliament for Oyam District.
Alungu declared new allegiance in Kulakula Trading Center, Ngai. “There is no future in UPC,” he stated, adding that after careful reflection, he found that the UPC lacked tangible progress and opportunities for the people.
Alungu praised Acilo, describing her as a “visionary leader committed to the welfare of Oyam district.” “Jane Frances Acilo is a leader who has come to rescue the people of Oyam with a clear and people-centred manifesto,” he added.
“She is kind, approachable, and has demonstrated her dedication through concrete actions even before being elected to Parliament.”
He expressed confidence that Acilo’s leadership would propel Oyam district higher. “Based on what she has accomplished so far, I believe she is the right person to transform our district’s future.”
This defection is expected to strengthen Acilo’s grassroots campaign in the area and get maximum votes from the UPC members.
Speaking at a rally in Adak A village, Ocini parish in Kamdini sub-county on Friday November 14, Acilo shared her motivation for entering politics.
“I joined politics with a clear vision: to advocate for grassroots income generation and ensure that the lives of the people of Oyam district are transformed.”
Recognising that most residents earn their living through farming, Acilo emphasised the importance of market access.
Backing Acilo’s candidacy is Bless Ajok, a former NRM primary contestant for the same seat. Ajok has urged voters to support Acilo. “When I campaigned, the people of Kamdini told me to give way to Jane Frances Acilo, and that’s why she became the NRM flagbearer.”
“It’s time for the youth to open their eyes and see the rightful leaders, and Jane Frances Acilo is one of them,” Ajok said.
