The Bishop Emeritus of Bunyoro-Kitara Diocese, Nathan Kyamauywa, has cautioned Ugandans against electing leaders who lack integrity.
By electing such leaders, the Bishop says it fuels corruption and undermine national progress.
Bishop Kyamauywa, who has been on a four-day pastoral visit to Amolatar Archdeaconry at the invitation of Bishop Prof Alfred Olwa of Lango Diocese, made the remarks on Monday during a visit to the Amolatar district headquarters.
Addressing district staff and political leaders at the education hall, he emphasised that leadership demands a high level of integrity for effective service delivery.
He noted that electing leaders without moral character only exacerbates corruption.
The bishop further urged district leaders and staff to embrace humility, saying it attracts God’s blessings for those who serve His people faithfully.
On the development agenda, Bishop Kyamauywa advised the government to consider sending Amolatar district technical staff to the Netherlands to benchmark effective development planning.
He explained that, like Amolatar, the Netherlands faces challenges posed by surrounding water bodies but has successfully used advanced planning to mitigate their impact on land.
The Amolatar district LC5 chairperson, Geoffrey Ocen—who is contesting for the position of MP for Kyoga North County—called for God’s divine guidance in choosing a morally upright leader to succeed him and sustain the district’s development achievements.
Currently four Amolatar district councillors are among seven candidates contesting to replace Ocen.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, Geoffrey Vuciri, commended the Church of Uganda for its long-standing partnership with the district in the education sector.
He revealed that of the 52 government-aided secondary schools in the district, 23 are under the Church of Uganda, offering quality and affordable education to the community.
